Step-By-Step Writing Guide
Before you set off on a quest to create a great sitcom it is important to check you understand what you are about to get yourself into. Firstly: is situation comedy right for you? Do you love and watch the genre or are you merely thinking of doing this because 'there's so much rubbish on'? You really need to be passionate about comedy and learning the art of sitcom writing to have any chance of success - however, the fact you're reading our website probably puts a tick in this box! Can you handle rejection? It is very rare for someone's script to get picked up by the first production company it is sent to - we're sure you can imagine what it's going to be like at first.
Are you a good writer? Whilst you don't have to be a literary genius you will obviously need good spelling and grammar skills. One email we've received went something like this: "hi ive written a comedy but i dont now why none wants to read it". Clearly some basic spelling and grammar skills are needed - thankfully the wonderful Microsoft Word can help with the more difficult stuff. A final, kind of crucial and rather obvious point to double check - do you have a sense of humour? It seems kind of silly asking this because you've logged onto this website which is devoted to humour but then again we've seen draft scripts which haven't contained a single joke; not even a subtle one!

The next thing to consider is do you have the time to put aside to create and develop fully rounded
characters for the screen? Really be sure you want to devote time and energy to this project before continuing as it takes more than a couple of hours to put together a decent script.
