1996 AND 1997 SPECIALS1996 Special: The Easter Bunny
As it's the start of Lent, Geraldine suggests that the villagers should give up bad habits: Owen will stop swearing; Leticia will cook normally; Jim will stop dithering; Frank will stop being pedantic; David will be nice to people; Geraldine will give up chocolate; and Hugo will give up lustful thoughts. Geraldine has the good idea that everyone will donate £1 for each occasion they fail their Lenten fasts, and will start a Video Club for the village. Later on, Leticia dies, but on her death-bed, just before breathing her last, reveals a great secret: she's Dibley's Easter Bunny! She asks Geraldine to take over from her in this key role. She dutifully dresses up on Easter Sunday to deliver eggs to the village. But Leticia played a practical joke before her death: all the residents are in bunny costumes delivering eggs! "Anyone who questions the existence of the rabbit comes under the ancient curse: Whoever shall question the rabbit but once, their firstborn shall thenceforth be a dunce."Alice explains the need for belief in the Easter Bunny; her mum doubted it! First broadcast: 8th Apr 1996 1996 Christmas Special: The Christmas Lunch Incident
After experimenting with many different sermon openings, she's inspired by her gift from Alice of the biography of the Spice Girls, and speaks on the two key issues that both Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the Spice Girls (ahem!) were virgins thrust into the public light at a young age; and that Jesus wants us to tell Him "what we want, what we really, really want"! Later on, Geraldine is inundated with several tempting offers of Christmas lunch, none of which she can happily dodge without offending someone. So she decides to go to all three and therefore has lunch with David and Hugo; Jim and Frank; and Alice, her mum and sister. She politely eats her way through some very big Christmas dinners in order to be nice to her parishioners, before Owen surprises her with a fourth! After all that food, she doesn't feel very well, so spends her evening in the bathroom whilst the villagers come round to praise her good work for them in the village. "I'm all ears.., well, not all ears, a face and tummy and legs and lots of other bits... including some rather private bits I only let a doctor see. And he wasn't a doctor and he got arrested soon afterwards..."Alice is ready to listen to Geraldine's sermon. She could have just said that! First broadcast: 25th Dec 1996 1997 Comic Relief Special: BallyKissDibley In a vicar exchange programme, Father Peter Clifford from Ballykissangel (Stephen Tompkinson) comes to Dibley to face Alice's bizarre charity ideas and Owen's swearing. First broadcast: 14th March 1997 (Approx 10 minute duration) Christmas Special 1997: Engagement
But more immediately, Geraldine has some counselling to do for Alice, who is confused about Jesus coming back because her mum wants to have the carpets nice and clean for him, and she also fears that she's unattractive because Hugo hasn't yet kissed her. Geraldine therefore arranges a meeting for Alice and Hugo where they can kiss, except they're so shy and she has to scream at them before they will do so. Problem is, once they start, they just can't stop, so their first kiss lasts for four hours! Following this they kiss whenever they pass each other in the street, on the tennis court, outside church, or anywhere at all! When Hugo tells David about his newly-found romance, he becomes very annoyed indeed, but Hugo stands up for himself for the first time and insists that he wants to marry Alice. This is good news for Geraldine too, as she now has a good front page story for the parish newsletter! "OH, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKES, JUST KISS, YOU MORONS!"Geraldine's tactful skills in developing romance between Alice and Hugo First broadcast: 26th Dec 1997 Series 1 | 1996/7 Specials | Series 2 | Series 3 | Final Specials |
