SERIES 1 (Season I) - First broadcast 1988

1. The End

The crew of the mining space ship, Red Dwarf, are wiped out by a radiation leak and Dave Lister, who was concealed in suspended animation during the accident, emerges 3 million years later to discover that he's the last human being alive. However, he's not entirely alone. Rimmer, an arrogant technician he shared sleeping quarters with, has been brought back as a hologram. Cat, a creature who has evolved from Lister's pet cat Frankenstein was sleeping in the hold, and Holly, the ship's mentally challenged computer has the job of guiding them home!

Best Quote: Lister explaining his future plans about his farm on Fiji to Rimmer.

Lister - "I'm gonna get a sheep and a cow and breed horses."
Rimmer - "With a sheep and a cow?"
Lister - "No, with horses and horses!"

First broadcast: 15th Feb 1988

2. Future Echoes

The Dwarfers are starting their journey back to earth and are travelling at light speed. Lister plans to go back into suspended animation for the duration of the journey. As they start going at the speed of light, time dilates and the crew end up seeing pockets of their future in their own time. Rimmer mistakenly sees Lister being blown up in the drive room when, in fact, it is actually Lister's son being killed in the future!

Best Quote: Lister explaining to the Cat that there's no room for all his clothes.

Lister - "You can take two suits and that's it."
Cat - "Two suits?! Then I'm staying."
Lister - "You can't stay. By the time I come out, you'll be dead."
Cat - "Two suits is dead!"

First broadcast: 22nd Feb 1988

3. Balance of Power

When Rimmer refuses to bring back Kochanski's hologram, Lister decides to get his revenge by taking a Chef's exam so he can be Rimmer's superior. Knowing that Rimmer respects and follows commands from people of a higher rank than him, Lister proceeds to take the exam. To try and divert him from completing it, Rimmer turns himself into Kochanski in hologram form and tries to change Lister's mind by telling him she never loved him. Lister, obviously, sees through this though, and completes the exam anyway. At the end of the episode, we presume Lister has passed, but it's later revealed that he was kidding.

Best Quote: Rimmer and Lister having an argument about bringing Kochanski's hologram back

Rimmer - "You don't know when to stop, do you, Lister? I'm your superior!"
Lister - "Technician was the lowest rank on this ship. The man who changed the bog rolls was higher than us!"

First broadcast: 29th Feb 1988

4. Waiting For God

Cat shows Lister a book all about his catty past, and Lister discovers that he is the Cat God. Meanwhile, Rimmer believes that a recovered Red Dwarf garbage pod holds the remains of a dead alien. Holly and Lister knew all along, but as Holly says: "It's a laugh isn't it?"

Best Quote: Lister explaining to Cat why he's the Cat God!

Lister - "No! What I'm saying is that over those three million years, your entire race of people evolved from my pet cat."
Cat - "Ah, I gotta go now, man. But let's do lunch sometime. I'll put it in my diary: 12:30, lunch with God. And, ah, formal dress, you know what I'm saying?"
Lister - "It is true, you know."
Cat - "Yeah? Then I gotta ask you the ultimate question. If you're God, why that face?"
Lister - "What's wrong with me face?"
Cat - "What's wrong with your face? It's upside down and inside out, that's what's wrong with it."

First broadcast: 7th March 1988

5. Confidence & Paranoia

Lister goes up to the Officer's Quarters before it's de-contaminated and ends up contacting a mutated pneumonia virus. His fevered hallucinations appear in solid form including fish raining, the Major of Warsaw spontaneously combusting and Lister's confidence and paranoia sitting in the drive room! Rimmer points out to Lister that Confidence and Paranoia are only side effects of his virus, and when Confidence smashes up the medical unit, trouble begins to brew. At the end of the episode, Rimmer tricks Lister into thinking he's bringing back Kochanski's hologram disk, but in fact it's a duplicate copy of himself!

Best Quote: Lister wondering why Confidence has picked up his cigarette end.

Lister - "What are you doing with that cigarette butt?"
Confidence - "Oh, you've embarrassed me now. It's just that your lips have touched it. Your lips! The King's kissing lips!

First broadcast: 14th March 1988

6. Me2

Rimmer's duplicate hologram brings nothing but trouble to Red Dwarf. The original Rimmer moves out of his and Lister's quarters and starts sharing a room with his double. Things go well at first, but of course even Rimmer can't stand himself for that amount of time and before long they begin to argue. Only one of them can stay once this starts and it's just a case of who should leave. Oh, and not before Lister tricks Rimmer into telling him about his Gazpacho Soup incident....

Best Quote: The Cat roams around Red Dwarf with a megaphone, calling for his mate!

Cat - "Hello, hello! Testing, testing! One, one, one. Me, me, me! Attention, all lady cats! I am feeling very, very sexy! Can you hear me, lady cats?! My body is available! Please form a queue! No squabbling! This is your lucky day!"

First broadcast: 21st March 1988
