SERIES 2 - First broadcast 19691. A Breach Of The Peace Whilst Eli is busy making dumplings, Nellie is being brought home by the local constabulary on a charge of shoplifting, which Nellie claims is a "frame up" as she wasn't shoplifting at all, but shop-putting, namely jars of pickles into the displays. However, she has to be down the magistrates court for 11 o'clock sharp the next morning. The courts proceedings soon turn into a farce with Nellie recognising one of the clerks of the court as an old school pal and Eli gets dragged into the defendants box resulting in him receiving a conditional discharge. Things get even worse when he finds out he only has 10 shillings spending money for the week, until he opens the envelope to find the weeks lodging money for the hotel which amounts to twenty quid. After Lily, Walter and Stan all arrive at the same hotel, things come to a head and the landlady throws them all out into the street. First broadcast: 15th July 1969 3. The Demon Drink Nellie wishes to join the Town Business Women's Club so she is entertaining two of its members to tea and dinky pies at home, that is, until Eli arrives a bit worse for wear. This is the last straw for Nellie, so she makes him sign the pledge - no more drink! After 7 days, 6 hours and 35 minutes, Eli has rediscovered new things in life, like the curtains in the living room, and how to tie his own shoelaces. Then, when he goes selling pickles in the pub, the barman introduces him to vodka, with a splash of lime and lemon, Nellie will never smell it on his breath. Aha! The perfect drink! He takes two bottles home, and he and Nellie end up sinking both bottles and getting a bit on the drunken side, just as the two leading ladies of the Town Business Women's Club reappear to recruit Nellie as their latest addition. All You Wish Yourself It's Nellie's birthday, and Eli has made breakfast in bed, but not to celebrate Nellie's joyous day, oh no, Eli has only gone and brought a new sports car and he's trying to sweet-talk her round with a tray of kippers and toast! He's even sprinkled parsley on the marmalade, but her lack of quality presents, including a china boy who's lost his cherries, puts a dampener on the birthday girl. To cheer Nellie up, Eli decides to take her to the Starlight Hall, formally the Labour Club with Lily and Walter. When the exotic dancing cabaret turns out to be the daughter of a part time onion peeler, Nellie is so shocked she covers her up with her fur stoal and they are thrown out of the club. First broadcast: 29th July 1969 5. Now Is The Hour Storm the cart horse is ill, and not one pickle or gherkin has been delivered for ages, so Eli has got his eye on a lorry as a replacement and Storm, along with Stan, is off to the knackers yard. There's only one problem, no-one has told Stan! When they eventually do tell Stan, they decide to have a 'do' in the Spread Eagle and the mayor is to present Stan with a lovely gold watch (which Eli buys on the cheap from the pub) but as always, there's a spanner in the works. The watch turns out to be one pinched from the mayor a year ago at the License Fiddlers Ball. And what of Storm I hear you ask? Well, it turns out Storm is a her, not a he, and he wasn't ill, she was pregnant! So Pledges Purer Pickles ring out to the sound of tiny little hooves. First broadcast: 5th August 1969 |
