Retail tycoon Philip Glass has acquired a call-centre in Mumbai as part of a takeover and promptly dispatches the reluctant Kenny Gupta to take charge and attempt to turn its fortunes around.

Kenny is accompanied on his trip by Philip's pampered daughter Tiffany - whom he has adored from afar for years - and her gormless, freeloading cousin Anthony.

Once in India, Kenny runs up against Dev, the manager who's using the centre to help fund his own lucrative side lines.

BSG Review:

The general reaction to this pilot was muted - i.e. most viewers who saw it didn't dislike it but, then again, didn't roll around laughing either.

Our personal opinion was that Mumbai Calling showed much promise - a warm and gentle comedy which didn't offend. We hope ITV1 do give Allan McKeown the go ahead to make a full series as we'd like to see how the comedy progresses now the characters are setup in the Indian call centre. There's certainly potential for plenty of laughs!

Whether the ITV executives do give it the greenlight remains to be seen - because of the Big Brother launch over on C4, the episode was only seen by 1.9 million viewers (a 9% share of the audience).

EDIT: ITV obviously does have the faith - they have now indeed ordered a full series. In fact Mumbai Calling has been given a prime-time slot in their autumn schedule.

Looking back, we think Kenny (the manager who refused to be fired) was the best thing about the pilot but the writing team did need to work on making the character of Philip Glass (the tycoon owner) more rounded. Let's hope they have done so.
