The cast of the hugely popular "Are You Being Served?"
return (minus Trevor Banister) as proprietors of Millstone Manor,
a Gloustershire Manor house bequeathed to them by Young Mr Grace.
The former Grace Brothers staff adjust to country life as proprietors
of a Manor House and farm in the fictional town of Great Tender
(just north of Tender Bottom). New characters include Joanne
Heywood as Miss Lovelock (Mr Grace's last nurse and executor
of his estate), Billy Burden as farmer Moulterd, and the lovely
Fluer Bennett as his daughter. |
| BCG Review: |
"Grace and Favour" contains pretty much the same
camp style of humour as "Are You Being Served?", with
strong emphasis on double-entendre. It was not as successful
as its predecessor in the UK, but was fairly well received
in the USA. Writers Lloyd and Croft blamed the lack of UK success
on the BBC insisting on the name change to "Grace and Favour".
Noting the show's popularity in the USA, they claimed the "Are
You Being Served, Again?" title automatically gave the
new show an audience. Series 1
was by far the better of the two. The programme features some
of Mollie Sugden's finest work as the cat and gin loving Mrs
Slocumbe. John Inman is also excellent in his role as Mr Humphries,
who may take a new lease on life after he discovers that the
farmer's daughter has to share his bed. |
