1. Rites of Passage
While searching for a Tower Block, Hugh Gaitskill House in 1993, television
repairman Gary Sparrow wanders down Duckett’s Passage and stumbles through a
hole in time. Wandering into wartime London and convinced he's dreaming,
Gary stumbles upon The Royal Oak. Landlord Eric is outraged that a man in
his 20's is not away fighting the enemy, forcing Gary to concoct a story to
explain his occupation, after all, there's been no television broadcast
since the war started. Gary also has to explain his lack of Identity Papers
and his German pen. Eric's married daughter, Phoebe takes an instant shine
to the handsome stranger, while bumbling Policeman Reg fails to spot
anything peculiar in Gary's appearance or lack of papers. When a bombing
raid fails to end Gary's "dream", he gains hero status by saving Eric's
life. Now he just needs to find a way home and an explanation for his wife,
Yvonne.

to believe. Meanwhile, Gary is under pressure from his wife to pass a job
interview, but refuses to buy a new suit and fails the interview. When
Yvonne doesn't tell him, Gary storms off to buy a suit, a 1940's suit. He
returns to The Royal Oak, suited, booted. When Phoebe mentions her love of

skills are put to the test by a woman in labour. Gary's knowledge of the
forthcoming air raid raises suspicions about his occupation again, and he is
arrested. When he doesn't return home, Yvonne worries about his whereabouts
and calls the police. Gary has a lot of talking to do, both in the past and
the present.

her Dad and asks to move in with Gary. He has to make up a wife and Marylin
Monroe springs to mind, while Phoebe slaps him and leaves. Having previously
persuaded Ron to print him some proper Identity papers, Gary agrees to take
Ron back to the 40's. It proves impossible, and when Ron ends up in the East
End in 1993 dressed in 40's clothing, he threatens to tell Yvonne about
Gary's double life. He wouldn't, would he?

about the mugging off an old lady named Phoebe Sparrow. Wondering if it's a
sign of a marriage between Gary & Phoebe in the past and convinced that
Phoebe will be sat waiting for him forever; Gary decides to make one more
trip back, to finish things properly. Convincing Ron to carry out their
cover story, a football trip to Lithuania, in which Ron actually has to go,
Gary returns to see Phoebe. Unfortunately he gets hit by an Ambulance in the
black out and spends days in hospital, with Phoebe by his bedside. Reg pays
a visit to Gary's "wife", Marilyn, and finds her with a man in tow, to
