Let Them Eat Cake LET THEM EAT CAKE

All About "Let Them Eat Cake"

“The liaisons were dangerous. The wigs were lethal.”

Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French are once again reunited in Let Them Eat Cake; a sitcom set in and around the French court at Versailles during the final years of the monarchy in France.

Let Them Eat Cake

Saunders takes centre stage as the very aristocratic Colombine, Comtesse de Vache, who is exceptionally wealthy, very shallow and completely hopeless when faced with menial day-to-day tasks. One might be forgiven for thinking her reminiscent of Edina 'Eddy' Monsoon - the role Saunders played in the hit British sitcom "Absolutely Fabulous" - but the comparison generally ends there. Accompanied by her faithful maidservant (Lisette) and homosexual couturier (Bouffant) the Comtesse worms her way in and out of various plots and schemes; otherwise she does what is necessary to remain at the very top of her game.

Although not historically accurate the short-lived series (which lasted only one season) should not be dismissed so easily. Using a clever combination of pseudo-French word play, slapstick, alliteration, obvious contrasts between the upper and lower classes, and other comedic devices; if you are a fan of their other work this is simply another example of the flawless comical stylings and timing that made the French and Saunders duo so popular.
