Coupling COUPLING

Steve Taylor
played by Jack Davenport
Steve Taylor (Jack Davenport)

Steve is a very hapless character who has the uncanny knack of digging himself into all sorts of trouble - he will constantly think before he speaks and make himself look very foolish. Despite his nervousness and haplessness he hasn't done too badly in the relationship stakes over the years, he went out with Jane for four years although this probably longer than he would have liked as he found her very irritating, unfortunately or some might say fortunately Jane was great in the sack and it was this that prevented him from dumping her.

It was during a failed dumping attempt in the ladies toilets that he met Susan, work colleague of his best mate Jeff. Steve had fancied her from a distance for a while and asked her out which caused a few problems, as he wasn't quite finished with Jane but that soon changed and he and Susan began seeing one another.

The relationship has not been without it's rocky moments and Susan at times finds Steve a frustrating boyfriend. He and Jeff are obsessed with Lesbian porn for reasons she cannot understand. He is also embarrassing, Susan is unlikely to forget the night Steve gave a long speech about men and why they need a lock on the toilet door and time he gave a speech on why sperm clinics are unnatural as they remove the wrongness from masturbation. Despite all this Susan has stayed with him and a year into their relationship Steve proposed. However that was as far as things have gone on that front. Steve has not made any real steps towards planning any sort of wedding and two years later Steve and Susan had their first child, whether this will make Steve pull his finger out and plan a wedding remains to be seen.

Susan Walker
played by Sarah Alexander
Susan Walker (Sarah Alexander)

Susan is very confident young woman with a very open attitude to life. Very little seems to phase her and she seems to be very grounded and confident in her sexuality. She sort-of went out with Patrick Maitland for a while until he dumped her although she wasn't too bothered about that, as she had never really liked him that much anyway. She then met Steve Taylor and began a relationship, which despite Steve being an insufferable prat at times, is still going strong.

Susan finds Steve hard work at times but she still loves him. A year into their relationship they were engaged but that was as far as it went as Steve seemed in no hurry to get married and, to be fair to him, nor was Susan. After she had been with Steve for three years and they seemed no closer to getting married she decided that maybe having a child would be easier and she and Steve went to get checked over. Unfortunately Susan was told by the doctor that the chances of her conceiving were very slight and so they stopped trying only for Susan to discover a few weeks later that she was pregnant. Susan was really excited about becoming a mum and Steve seemed happy about becoming a dad, however much to Susan's annoyance he soon began coming out with all sorts of bizarre concerns and worries. Despite all this nine months later Steve and Susan had a little boy and Steve thankfully seemed really happy.

Sally Harper
played by Kate Isitt
Sally Harper (Kate Isitt)

Sally is Susan's best friend. Sally is very insecure about herself, mainly in regards to her appearance. Being the owner of a salon probably hasn't helped with this obsession about looks. Now in her thirties Sally is beginning to worry about the future, finding a man and having children before it's too late.

Sally first met Patrick Maitland at a party at Susan's office. The attraction was immediate and the two shared a kiss to the Spiderman theme tune. However Sally was rather drunk at the time and when Patrick asked for a number she assumed he wanted Susan's and gave that to him. Patrick ended up dating Susan and Sally decided that her and Patrick were not meant to be. However when Susan and Patrick split up, Sally began to try and subtly peruse Patrick but unfortunately Patrick didn't take the hint and they ended up good friends; however their relationship deepened (but both denied it) and soon Patrick was seeing someone again but not for long. One night Patrick and Sally were at dinner with Susan, Steve, Jeff and Jane when she declared her love for Patrick and then left embarrassed. Patrick soon caught up with Sally and admitted he loved her too and the two began seeing each other. After nine months together Sally found an engagement ring in a cupboard at Patrick's apartment.

Patrick Maitland
played by Ben Miles
Patrick Maitland (Ben Miles)

Patrick is a something of a playboy. He enjoys fast cars and beautiful women and has a very simple view of the world. He doesn't believe in being complicated and likes to be direct. He is very popular with women although most of them are usually put off eventually by his attitude to life. When it comes to women Patrick sees them generally as objects and not human beings, for example he enjoys filming himself having sex with women either with or without their knowledge and he keeps all the tapes in a special cupboard.

Most women who know Patrick consider him a bastard as he never breaks things gently to them, for example when he's dumping a girl he will simply say, “You're dumped” and he doesn't cushion the blow or try and make out it's not her it's him etc. Despite his playboy lifestyle Patrick isn't against settling down if he finds the right woman and at a party one night he met Sally Harper and after a few false starts the two began a relationship. At first Patrick found it hard to adjust from his old lifestyle to being in a proper relationship but it didn't take him long to realise he wanted to be with Sally and nine months into their relationship he decided to propose.

Jeff Murdock
(Series 1 - 3)
played by Richard Coyle
Jeff Murdock (Richard Coyle)

Jeff is Steve's best friend. When it comes to women there not many men who can dish out so much advice based on so little experience. Jeff is worse around women than Steve and as a result is very unsuccessful in that department; he gets nervous around them and usually ends up doing stupid things around them and scaring them off (in fact at school he was called "Scary Jeff").

Jeff, like Steve has a thing about Lesbian porn, in fact he's obsessed with naked women and dirty magazines. It's almost as if when Jeff got to adolescence his body grew and matured but his brain got left behind, he behaves like a hormonal teenager at times with his obsession with breast and arses. Part of this may be due to his overbearing mother. From what Jeff tells his friends his mother is very domineering and not the sort of person who would approve in teenage fantasies which suggests that perhaps Jeff is now trying to make up for lost time. Despite the fact he has now moved into his own flat, his mother still haunts him and he still has nightmares about being caught by her in an embarrassing situation and her saying “Oh Jeffery” in one of her many levels of disappointment (which apparently is the only way she communicates).

In 2001 Jeff finally found his perfect partner, his boss Julia. Julia was very like Jeff in the way she was always very nervous and never knew what to do around the opposite sex. The relationship lasted about a year although a close encounter with Wilma Lettings from the office nearly ruined things. After a year together Julia's ex returned and swept her off her feet and Jeff was left alone once again - he decided to move to Lesbos in hope of improving his sex life.

Jane Christie
played by Gina Bellman
Jane Christie (Gina Bellman)

Jane is self-centred and is the centre of her own little world; she works for a radio station and does the traffic reports. Whilst Jane is selfish, vain, manipulative and extremely irritating she knows a thing or two about men and how to satisfy them in bed, which is why Steve stayed with her as long as he did. After she split with Steve, Jane wasted no time trying to get out there again and find a new man although this proved easier said than done. Her direct and sometimes blunt approach to people and her very narrow minded personality soon put most men off her.

After a couple of years of short flings she met James, a DJ at her station whom Jane made an instant impression on the moment he arrived. Unfortunately for Jane, James was a religious man and didn't believe in sex before marriage although they did begin a non-sexual relationship (though Jane was convinced he'd crack before long). After they had seen each other for a few weeks James finally met Steve, Susan and the others and much to Jane's horror it turned out that Susan, the woman she had lost Steve to, had gone out with James at uni.

James decided that he and Jane should spend some time apart to work out how they really felt and he went off to Germany for a few months. At first Jane managed to behave herself but before long she got desperate and grabbed a quickie with the Pizza man. When James returned he and Jane split and Jane was on the lookout again. She joined a dating agency through which she met Oliver Morris. At first she was not impressed but when fate seemed to keep throwing them together she began to think that maybe he was the man for her after all.

Oliver Morris
(Series 4)
played by Richard Mylan
Oliver Morris (Richard Mylan)

Oliver is what you might call the ultimate geek. In many ways he is very like Jeff in the way he behaves around women and the fact he has had very little practice with them. He is the ultimate Sci-Fi geek; he owns a specialist bookshop for Sci-Fi/ Fantasy books and TV related merchandise. He met Jane through a dating agency and was very pleased with the results even if Jane wasn't. By this time he was quite desperate, his last girlfriend Tamzin had left him a year ago and he hadn't had sex since.

It took a while for Oliver to impress Jane but after a while and after several chance meetings she finally seemed to take a liking to him and he certainly liked her. His flat has not been the same since Tamzin left. He describes it as "unedited". There are empty lager cans and crisp packets all over the place, not to mention the porn videos and magazines. However this did not seem to put Jane off, if anything it turned her on a bit. It looks like Oliver's luck might be changing.
