Following the popular previous release of The Comedians, Network have now released the long awaited second volume on DVD: The Comedians - The Very Best of Series Two.
The Comedians is one of the greatest ratings successes for ITV. Its status ensured its longevity - the series lasted from 1971 to 1993. Many of the comedians who appeared in the show have gone on to become household names. It was amidst the gritty, unsympathetic environment of Northern working men's clubs with an audience who was anything but easy to please, these comedians honed their routines and jokes to perfection. Frank Carson, Charlie Williams, Bernard Manning, Colin Crompton and Ken Goodwin all became masters of their particular brand of humour and the knowing wink.
As you may know, The Comedians was immediately popular upon its initial broadcast. It garnered a BAFTA nomination for Best Light Entertainment Programme. This new DVD set contains all the best moments from series two, along with a special documentary on the lives and works of the Northern Club Comedians. This bonus features interviews with Bernard Manning, Charlie Williams, Jackie Carlton, George Roper and Tom O'Connor.
