Blackadder
played by Rowan Atkinson |
 |
The four Blackadder characters are devious, scheming
men who thinks only of self-improvement and self-preservation.
Blackadder seems unable to function without being permanently
sarcastic and rude ("No, don't bother apologising. I'm
sorry you're alive."), never smiles and seems to have the
worst luck in the world. He does however have a likeable roguish
charm and a very quick wit.
In the first series Blackadder is the son of a rather loud
king whilst in the second series he is transformed into a
Lord who spends most of his day trying to avoid being beheaded
by the mad Queen. Series 3 sees Edmund demoted to a servant
who has to look after a rather dim Prince Regent whereas in
the final series he is a captain in the army who tries every
possible excuse to avoid being sent into battle.
The Blackadder character is played brilliantly by comedy
star Rowan Atkinson, who manages to ooze sarcasm and makes
every put-down hilarious. Thanks to Atkinson, Blackadder has
taken his place as one of British sitcom's best characters.

Baldrick
played by Tony Robinson |
 |
One word can be used to describe Baldrick, disgusting.
Blackadder's sidekick and general slave hasn't had a wash ever
by the looks of it. Baldrick takes most of the blame for his
master's mistakes and also manages to come up with the worst
ideas ever after uttering his catch-phrase "Sir, I have
a cunning plan". You can't not like Baldrick though thanks
to his sheer stupidity and terrible treatment.

Percy (series 1 & 2)
played by Tim McInnerny |
 |
odd talking, slightly camp
and very, very dim Percy is Blackadder's other sidekick in series
one and two of this sitcom. It can't be stressed enough how
stupid Percy and at the same time how extremely funny he is
(as in the laughing at rather than with sense). Percy is very
loyal to Blackadder, something he really shouldn't be as Edmund
uses and abuses him constantly.
Tim McInnery's brilliant interpretation and portrayal of the
slow sidekick makes Percy one of the British Sitcom Guide's
favourite characters of all time.

| OTHER CHARACTERS
|
 |
Richard IV (series 1)
played by Brian Blessed
Richard IV is Edmund's father. He doesn't much like Edmund,
something he makes very clear. The king can be heard from
miles away thanks to his hearty boom.
|
 |
Queenie (series 2)
played by Miranda Richardson
Queen Elizabeth I is without a doubt totally and utterly
mad, something which isn't a desirable attribute of someone
who has the power to have people executed. Queenie is extremely
childish and talks like a five year old, yet Blackadder still
feels the need to obtain her approval.
|
 |
Lord Melchett (series 2)
played by Stephen Fry
Melchett is the cowardly "yes" man to Queenie.
He is officially her chief adviser but instead of offering
good advice spends most of his time sucking up to the queen
or attempting to get Blackadder, his rival, into her bad books.
|
 |
Prince Regent (series 3)
played by Hugh Laurie
To call the Prince Regent stupid beyond belief would be an
understatement. Not only does the prince completely lack intelligence
and common sense he is also thoroughly useless and very gullible.
Blackadder, as his butler, considers it his duty to keep the
prince out of trouble and relieve him of all his money.
|
 |
General Melchett (series 4)
played by Stephen Fry
If there is one person you really don't want handing out
orders and making up battle plans it's General Sir Anthony
Hogmanay Melchett. The man is barking mad!
|
 |
Darling (series 4)
played by Tim McInnerny
Captain Kevin Darling ("Darling, come here") is
Gen. Melchett's secretary and has one aim in life, to see
Blackadder caught and punished for his frequent rule breaking.
The only thing interesting about the secretary is his odd
facial twitches and the lengths he will go to avoid being
sent to the trenches.
|
 |
George (series 4)
played by Hugh Laurie
George is Blackadder's fellow officer in the trenches. It's
obvious he got the position thanks to his family connections
rather than intelligence, something he has absolutely none
of. Apart from being dim George has one other major flaw,
he is a pathological optimist. It just doesn't dawn on him
war is a bad thing and he has about as much chance of surviving
it with Melchett in charge as Baldrick has of winning cook
of the year award.

| THE GUEST STARS |
 |
Almost every episode of Blackadder had at least one additional
character, many of which appeared in multiple series (such as
Lord Flashheart (WOOF!) and "Bob" the suspiciously
female servant). Many of the characters were played by British
TV stars; Rik Mayall, Angus Deyton, Tom Baker, Robbie Coltrane,
Chris Barrie, Adrian Edmondson and Geoffrey Palmer are just
a few of those that have appeared. Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry,
Tim McInnery and Miranda Richardson also pop-up as various characters
in the series in which they did not star. For a full list of
