Synopsis:

Life is tough for actors. They dream about the West End and big budget movies; but the reality is a daily grind of auditions for cheap and tacky adverts and corporate videos. Amid the rubbish ideas, bizarre clients, and deranged actors, Rick Hucknall and his assistant Sue have the unenviable task of finding the right actor for - all too often - the wrong job.

BSG Review:

"Acting Up" is, as far as we're aware, the first British sitcom made for the web that's any good (the other couple of online-only sitcoms made to date are just thinly disguised commercials for brands like Virgin and Nectar).

The production values of this new sitcom are very impressive, as is the acting and general setup. It therefore comes as quite a shock to be told that 'Acting Up' was filmed on a tight budget with no backing from any production companies!

There's certainly some humour to be found within this web sitcom... some jokes are smart and subtle whilst others use more obvious devices but, despite this, still bring a smile to the face.

Based on the first two episodes, we have to say 'Acting Up' does somewhat suffer from its premise - that is to say that the "in and out" nature of casting has left writers Miles Moss and Steve Swift with little time to develop the interaction between Rick and Sue and help the audience establish a rapport with the other characters.

It'd be nice to follow a smaller group of actors each week so we could get to know each of them well but instead the sheer mass of characters never allows us to become familiar with anyone. Frustratingly we don't even find out the name of many of the characters (thankfully our character guide can help with this though).

Despite the lack of character development so far "Acting Up" is definitely worth giving a chance because there's some very funny auditions buried in the program - the posh bloke (played by CP Hallam) attempting to provide a voiceover for the blue movie in episode one is brilliant - it's worth watching "Acting Up" for this moment alone!
